KL Rahul’s decision to turn down the captaincy offer from Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2025 has taken many by surprise. According to reports, the 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was approached by the franchise owners to lead the Delhi-based team, but he opted to focus solely on his role as a player in the upcoming season.

This decision marks a shift in Rahul’s approach, as he has previously captained both Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. KL Rahul was one of the marquee signings for Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2025 mega auction, fetching a hefty ₹14 crore. His experience and consistency with the bat were expected to make him a prime candidate for leadership.
However, with his refusal, Delhi Capitals have now turned to seasoned all-rounder Axar Patel, who is set to take over the reins. Axar, a key member of the franchise since 2019, was retained for ₹18 crore before the auction. He already has a brief taste of captaincy, having led DC in a match during IPL 2024 when Rishabh Pant was suspended due to an over-rate offence.
