KL Rahul, who was named as India’s white-ball vice-captain earlier this month seems to be enjoying the new role bestowed upon him by the management. He would love to keep wickets for the Indian team in the upcoming three World Cups. Notably, Indian team management has been grooming KL Rahul as wicket-keeper batsmen in ODIs since before the coronavirus pandemic struck.

Rahul said that if he managed to pull out consistent performance as a keeper and batsman, it gives the team choice of playing an extra batter or bowler. His success as a wicket-keeper batsman can provide the Indian team a lot of flexibility and allowed the players to focus on their roles better. India will be hosting the T20 World Cup and ODI World Cup in 2021 and 2023 respectively. While Australia will be hosting the T20 World Cup in 2022.

Talking about the same during a virtual press conference, Rahul said, “Nothing has been told to me, we as a team are not thinking that far ahead, World Cups are important, that is the long vision for every team but I think for me, we are still taking it one game at a time, and if I keep putting consistent performances as a keeper and batsman, it gives us the choice of playing an extra batter or bowler. If I can keep in the coming three World Cups, I would love to do it for my country.”

Rahul also said that his batting position will depend on the format India will be playing. India and Australia will be locking horns with each other in three ODIs, three T20Is, and four Tests. The first ODI will be played on Friday, November 27 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Explaining the same, Rahul said, “My batting position will depend on the format I am playing and what the team wants from me and what combination sits better, the last ODI series we played, I batted at number five and I kept the wickets so yeah, and I am happy to play whatever role the team gives me. Look I haven’t played a lot of 50-over cricket for a continued period of time, though I have been a part of the Indian team for a few years now.”
