A recent report from PTI has shared that the board has decided on three names for vice-captaincy for the T20I team. The decision came after Team India captain Virat Kohli has announced that he will step down from the role after the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE and Oman. With Rohit Sharma leading the team in the T20I format, anyone among KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah will become his deputy.

The report again suggested that since Rohit Sharma will lead the T20I captain after the T20 World Cup 2021, the post of vice-captain should be handled by a youngster, who can then take over the role from Rohit Sharma later on as Mumbai batsman is 34-years-old now. Meanwhile, the board is in no hurry to announce the next vice-captain for as well.

However, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah are in the race as well. Meanwhile, KL Rahul has the experience of captaincy when he was the stand-in captain during the fifth T20I against New Zealand last year and led the team well since Rohit Sharma had the hamstring injury as well. He also leads the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League 2021.

On the other hand, Rishabh Pant, who has led Delhi in domestic cricket earlier, is currently captaining the Delhi Capitals franchise in IPL 2021 in the absence of Shreyas Iyer. He has impressed with his captaincy as the team placed at the top of the points table in the first half of the league before it was suspended due to COVID-19.

“Pant is a serious contender but you can’t rule out KL also as he is an IPL captain. The darkhorse will be Jasprit Bumrah,” the BCCI insider told PTI.

Meanwhile, as per the report, if Delhi Capitals wins the title this season, then Rishabh Pant will be ahead of the race of becoming the next India T20I vice-captain. However, it will be interesting to see who will have the last laugh after the T20 World Cup later this.
