During the third match of the 11th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Virat Kohli used his DRS card to perfection as his individual decision led to the downfall of Rinku Singh.

After winning the toss and choosing to field, Kolkata Knight Riders were set a target of 177 runs to win the match. Knight Riders were bolstered by Sunil Narine’s half-century as it helped them to stay in the chase despite the fall of wickets at the other end.

On the fourth delivery of the 16th over, Kohli was seen trusting his gut feeling when he opted for the review against Rinku Singh without consulting anyone. Kohli was confident to the extent that despite wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock not showing any sign of excitement, he decided to question the umpire.

Rinku Singh’s unsuccessful attempt to pull a Chris Woakes delivery induced a slight edge of his bat. After the umpire ruled the decision in the favour of the batsman, replays showed that there was a slight tickle on the bat, which only Kohli and bowler Woaked had noticed.

Eventually, the third umpire ruled the decision in the favour of the fielding team, which meant that Rinku Singh had to walk the long walk back to the pavilion. He ended up scoring 6 (6) with the help of one four. It was Woakes’ second wicket of the match.
