As IPL 2026 gathers momentum, all eyes will be on Rohit Sharma when the Mumbai Indians take on the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium. Backing the veteran opener to deliver once again, former India selector Kris Srikkanth has made a bold prediction ahead of the high-profile clash.

Srikkanth pointed to Rohit’s long-standing dominance over KKR, calling it one of the most one-sided match-ups in IPL history. The numbers certainly support that claim. Rohit has amassed over 1,000 runs against Kolkata, making them one of his most favoured opponents in the tournament.

“KKR used to be like halwa for Rohit Sharma a few years back. He is going to smash their bowling like eating halwa tomorrow,” Kris Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. He further doubled down on the statement, adding, “Once KKR comes, Rohit is in a comfort zone.”

While such remarks may sound exaggerated, Rohit’s record against KKR tells a compelling story. The MI opener has scored 1,083 runs against them at a strike rate of 127.86, including six half-centuries and a century, with a highest score of 109*. Few players have enjoyed such sustained success against a single franchise. However, recent trends offer a more nuanced picture.

Rohit hasn’t registered a half-century against KKR since 2020, and at the Wankhede Stadium, his strike rate against them has hovered around 120.81. Despite that, the veteran has reinvented his T20 approach over the last two seasons. After operating at a strike rate of around 133 for several years, Rohit has significantly upped his tempo, striking at 150 in 2024 and maintaining a similar rate in 2025. This shift reflects a conscious move towards a more aggressive style at the top of the order.

Head coach Mahela Jayawardene also highlighted this transformation ahead of the season. “There’s a transformation in Rohit. We’ve seen the commitment on his part,” Jayawardene said. He further added, “I’m pretty satisfied with what I’ve seen in the practice games and in the nets — the hand speed, the technique, everything.”

Despite Rohit’s dominance, KKR have a proven weapon in Sunil Narine. The mystery spinner has dismissed Rohit 10 times in 28 innings, keeping him relatively quiet with a strike rate of just over 106.

This contrast sets up a fascinating contest — Rohit’s historical dominance versus Narine’s tactical edge. As Mumbai look to start strong, the outcome of this battle could well shape the match’s narrative.
