With the second Test of the India-New Zealand series set to commence in Pune, the Indian team management made a strategic decision to bring Washington Sundar into the playing XI, replacing Kuldeep Yadav. While some hailed this move as a logical step, others questioned the need to drop Kuldeep, who had performed decently in the first Test.

Sanjay Manjrekar, a former Indian cricketer, defended the team’s choice, citing several factors. He pointed out that Sundar’s unique bowling style and physical attributes would be well-suited to the black soil pitch at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, which is known for assisting spinners from the outset.

Additionally, Sanjay Manjrekar highlighted the need to give Sundar a chance to prove himself in Test cricket, especially after his impressive performances in the Ranji Trophy. He wrote: “Common sense selection. In-form seamer in. When pitch is offering a lot, you don’t need an artiste like Kuldeep, a tall, quick, finger spinner will do. 👍 #INDvNZ”.

Sundar’s inclusion in the team was a reward for his recent form. His outstanding century and three-wicket hauls in both innings of Tamil Nadu’s match against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy showcased his all-round abilities. However, some fans and experts argued that Kuldeep’s contribution in the first Test should not be overlooked. While he might not have been as impactful as Sundar, he still played a crucial role in India’s victory.

The decision to drop Kuldeep for Sundar sparked a debate among cricket enthusiasts. Some believed it was a calculated move to strengthen India’s bowling attack, while others felt it was a missed opportunity to give Kuldeep more game time and build his confidence. Ultimately, only time will tell whether this strategic move will pay off for the Indian team.
