Rishabh Pant’s much-anticipated debut for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2025 ended in disappointment as the star captain was dismissed for a six-ball duck against his former team, Delhi Capitals (DC). The clash at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 24 saw Pant fall victim to the clever tactics of Kuldeep Yadav, marking a tough start to his stint with LSG.

Pant walked out to bat at No. 4 following the departure of Mitchell Marsh, who had provided a solid foundation for LSG with a blistering knock. The stage seemed set for Pant to make a mark, but his attempt to take charge was met with disciplined bowling. He cautiously saw off a couple of deliveries from Mukesh Kumar before facing Kuldeep Yadav, a former DC teammate well aware of Pant’s approach.

Kuldeep’s variations kept Pant guessing. The left-hander left the first ball thinking it was a wide, misjudged a reverse sweep on the next, and nudged a ball to short fine leg without any success. Growing frustrated, Pant decided to go big but mistimed a lofted shot down the ground.

The ball barely connected with the toe end of his bat, resulting in a straightforward catch for Faf du Plessis at long off. It was a disheartening moment for Pant, who was signed by LSG for a record ₹27 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. The wicket of Pant, combined with the dismissal of Nicholas Pooran shortly after, allowed Delhi Capitals to regain control.

DC had struggled to contain the onslaught from Marsh during the powerplay, but Pant’s and Pooran’s quick exits gave them a glimmer of hope. However, LSG’s middle order continued to fire, and despite the setback, they managed to post a formidable total.

Nicholas Pooran showcased his power-hitting with a brisk fifty before Mitchell Starc’s pace dismantled his stumps. David Miller then took the reins, sealing the game with a couple of massive sixes, as LSG reached 209/8. Despite Pant’s early departure, LSG managed to secure a thrilling victory, demonstrating their batting depth and resilience.
