India spinner Kuldeep Yadav produced a sensational performance during his short stint with Yorkshire, claiming his maiden 10-wicket haul in first-class cricket. The left-arm wrist-spinner played a starring role in Yorkshire’s emphatic innings and 106-run victory over Essex at Headingley, a result that also secured the county’s Division One status with three days remaining. Kuldeep finished the match with remarkable figures of 10/120. He claimed 4/70 in the first innings before producing an even better spell in the second, returning 6/50 to complete his memorable 10-wicket match haul.
His outstanding contribution also earned him the County Championship Player of the Round award. The achievement was particularly impressive because Headingley is not traditionally regarded as a venue that offers significant assistance to spinners. Kuldeep admitted that the pitch initially provided little help, forcing him to rely on accuracy, variations and pressure to create opportunities.
“It wasn’t a rank turner; Headingley is not known for that. I was just trying to make the batters make mistakes.” Kuldeep’s ability to adapt became crucial during the second innings. After noticing footmarks outside the stumps, the Indian spinner changed his angles and regularly switched between bowling over and around the wicket. The tactical adjustment made it difficult for Essex’s batters to settle.
His variations and control eventually began to trouble the Essex middle order, allowing Kuldeep to pick up six wickets and complete his first 10-wicket haul in red-ball cricket.

The performance also strengthened Kuldeep’s growing relationship with Yorkshire. The county signed him on a short-term deal in July, although his stint was interrupted by India’s Test series in Sri Lanka. He also featured in Yorkshire’s defeat against Surrey at The Oval. Despite spending only a limited period with the county, Kuldeep has quickly earned the respect of his teammates and coaching staff. Following his memorable Headingley performance, the 31-year-old made his intentions clear about returning to the County Championship.
Kuldeep described Headingley as his “ultimate home” and promised to return after completing his landmark achievement. “When I was about to get the sixth one, I thought, ‘Give me one more, let me complete the ten-wicket haul!’” “I’ll definitely come back, that’s a promise.”

Yorkshire head coach Anthony McGrath was equally impressed by the spinner’s performance. He praised Kuldeep’s control, ability to extract turn and knack for constantly changing his angles to unsettle batters.
“You could see how much he spins it and his control of spin was just sensational.” Kuldeep has also developed a strong bond with the Yorkshire dressing room. His spin-bowling partner Dom Bess, who claimed five wickets in the match, praised the Indian’s enthusiasm and passion for the craft.
Bess also shared an 83-run eighth-wicket partnership with Kuldeep during Yorkshire’s first innings and highlighted how much the Indian enjoys bowling.

“The thing I love about KD is the love of craft. He comes here to play and absolutely loves it.” McGrath further underlined Yorkshire’s interest in bringing Kuldeep back, indicating that the county would be delighted to have the Indian spinner return for another campaign.
