It has happened for the first time in his history of T20 cricket, that a decision of the game came after the two Super Overs as Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a loss against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in an absolute thriller of a game. Jasprit Bumrah conceded just five runs in the first Super Over, but then Mohammed Shami matched his skills and conceded the same amount of runs as the game reached the second Super Over.
Interestingly, the batsmen who got out in the first Super Over won’t participate in the second and the same bowler also wasn’t allowed to bowl in the second Super Over. MI came out to bat first after Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock managed to score just five runs when the target was six in the first Super Over. For the super over, Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya came out to bat for MO while Chris Jordan was bowling for KXIP.

It was a good battle as Mumbai scored 11 runs owing to a brilliant save by Mayank Agarwal at the boundary else they would’ve ended up chasing 15 runs. To chase down, 12 runs, Chris Gayle came out with Mayank Agarwal and the former smashed a six on the very first ball off Trent Boult and then, Agarwal smacked a boundary with five needed to win off three and another boundary followed to let the celebrations start in the KXIP camp as the game finally ended and their hopes were stayed alive in the tournament.
After opting to bat first, MI lost three wickets in the powerplay itself, as Arshdeep Singh bowled brilliantly and scalped Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. At the other end, Mohammed Shami got the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav to leave MI reeling at 38/3 in the sixth over. To arrest the collapse, Krunal Pandya rebuilt the innings with Quinton de Kock and the latter batted superbly despite wickets falling. They added 58 runs for the fourth wicket before Krunal got out to Ravi Bishnoi.
De Kock went on to surpass another 50-run mark before getting out Chris Jordan. Just an over ago, Hardik Pandya got out and MI was at 122/6 in 17 overs. This is when Kieron Pollard decided to tonk the KXIP bowlers along with Natah Coulter-Nile as they smashed 54 runs off the last three overs to help MI post 176 runs in their 20 overs.

Chasing a modest total of 177 runs, KXIP needed their openers to start well. However, Jasprit Bumrah castled Mayank Agarwal in the 4th over and then the mighty Chris Gayle in the middle. Meanwhile, KL Rahul started middling the ball on most of the occasions. Gayle also tonked a couple over the ropes, but Rahul Chahar dismissed the Universe Boss and then, Nicholas Pooran came out to smash 24 off 12 balls with two sixes and as many fours.
Bumrah came to the rescue of MI as he dismissed Pooran on a well-directed short ball and all this while, KL Rahul kept on playing his shots and scored another half-century at the same time and got an able ally in Deepak Hooda. With 62 needed in 39 balls, the duo brought down the equation down to 27 off three overs. However then Bumrah dismissed Rahul with a perfect yorker at 149 kph speed and the batsman had no answer to it.
However, Hooda and Jordan smashed 13 runs in the 19th over of Coulter-Nile as Trent Bout had to defend nine runs. He managed to deliver for his team sensationally despite Jordan getting one boundary off the edge. What followed was absolute madness in the middle as the world witnessed its first-ever double Super Over in T20 cricket.
Match Summary:
Kings XI Punjab – 176/6 in 20 overs, 5/2 in 1st super over, 16/0 in 2nd super over (KL Rahul: 77, N Pooran: 24; J Bumrah: 3/24) defeated Mumbai Indians – 176/6 in 20 overs, 5/1 in 1st super over, 12/1 in 2nd super over (QDK: 53; M Shami: 2/30, A Singh: 2/35) in second super over
