South Africa fast bowler Lungi Ngidi etched his name into the history books on Wednesday, January 7, by becoming the first player to claim a hat-trick in SA20 history. The 29-year-old pacer delivered a match-defining spell for Durban’s Super Giants, helping the Keshav Maharaj-led side secure a thrilling 15-run victory in a high-scoring contest at Kingsmead, Durban.

With the T20 World Cup 2026 on the horizon, Ngidi’s fiery performance could not have come at a better time. Lungi Ngidi struck gold in the 18th over of the opposition’s innings, turning the game on its head with three wickets in three deliveries. He opened his account by dismissing David Wiese on the second ball of the over before removing Sunil Narine and Gerald Coetzee on successive deliveries.

Both Narine and Coetzee departed for golden ducks, triggering celebrations in the Super Giants camp and sending the Kingsmead crowd into a frenzy. Unsurprisingly, the video of Ngidi’s sensational hat-trick has since gone viral across social media platforms.

The right-arm quick, who has previously represented Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, finished with impressive figures of 3 for 39 in his four overs, underlining his value as a proven death-overs specialist.

Earlier in the 16th league match of the SA20 2025–26 season, Super Giants skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision initially backfired as Shai Hope produced a record-breaking innings, smashing an unbeaten 118 off 55 balls to power his side to 201/4. Hope shared a 101-run opening stand with Connor Esterhuizen, who contributed a brisk 37 off 28 balls, and struck nine fours and nine sixes during his stay. Hope’s knock is now the highest individual score in SA20 history.

Chasing 202, the Super Giants made a promising start through Kane Williamson and Marques Ackerman, but regular wickets derailed the chase. Despite Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 97, the hosts fell short, as Ngidi’s hat-trick proved decisive in sealing a memorable win.
