Mahela Jayawardene Appeals For Reduction Of Violence In Sri Lanka

Former Sri Lankan skipper, Mahela Jayawardene has expressed that violence is not the solution to the change that is demanded in his country and he has made an appeal for peace to take over. He is currently part of the IPL 2022 bio-bubble as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians (MI) as the head coach of the side and he has been constantly following the updates in Sri Lanka as well.

The Island nation has been under severe economic crisis in the last few months and a state of emergency has also been declared as well. The anti-government protestors in the country went over the line on Tuesday (May 10) by placing a checkpoint on the road leading to the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo to prevent the Rajapaksa family loyalists from fleeing the country.

Mahinda Rajapaksa had resigned as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka a day before the incident. Mahela Jayawardene tweeted reminding the Sri Lankan people about the history of the island nation where there has been a plethora of instances of civil war and how it had affected the trust inside the country.

Mahela Jayawardene added violence can never be a solution needed to bring about changes and acknowledged the disciplined protest for the last one month or so. He added the importance of ensuring people’s power is being used in the right way and called for unity of the Sri Lankan people as well in the tough times.

“History has given us lessons of civil war and distrust among people through race and religion disharmony. Also how it’s been used as a weapon to fulfill its own agendas. Divided We Fall and United We Stand Strong. Always think as Sri Lankan !!” Jayawardene tweeted on Twitter.

“Violence will not achieve the Change we all seeking for and truly amazing discipline everyone showed for the last 30 days. So please let’s not let vested interest take over people’s power,” he tweeted in another post.
