Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has indicated a possible shift in how Rohit Sharma will be utilised during IPL 2026, hinting that the veteran opener could spend more time on the field compared to last season. In IPL 2025, Rohit was frequently used as an Impact Player, often subbed in purely as a batter and spending limited time on the field.

The move sparked debate, with many experts questioning whether it disrupted his rhythm as an opener and reduced his overall influence on the game. Addressing the situation, Jayawardene explained that last season’s decision was largely influenced by fitness concerns.

“The way we managed him last year… he had a few niggles, so we just needed to manage that,” he said, offering clarity on Rohit’s limited on-field presence.

Despite the restricted role, Rohit remained a key figure in the dressing room and continued to impact the team with his experience. However, Jayawardene now appears keen to involve him more actively. “This year, I want to keep him more on the field as much as I can,” he stated, signalling a potential change in approach.

At the same time, the Mumbai Indians think tank must balance this with tactical flexibility. The Impact Player rule, along with the team’s composition, plays a crucial role in decision-making. With several all-rounders in the squad, captain Hardik Pandya often requires multiple bowling options, which can influence substitution strategies.

Mahela Jayawardene acknowledged this challenge with a touch of humour. “Most of our players are all-rounders who can bowl. The only two who aren’t at the moment are Rohit and Surya,” he said, referring to Suryakumar Yadav.

As IPL 2026 approaches, Mumbai Indians will aim to strike the right balance between maximising Rohit’s presence and maintaining tactical depth, ensuring the five-time champions remain strong contenders.
