Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has backed Suryakumar Yadav, stating that the India T20I captain remains unfazed by individual form and is focused purely on contributing to the team’s success. His comments come after Suryakumar led India to a historic third T20 World Cup title, further cementing his credentials as a leader.

“SKY is not worried too much about it. He’s a class operator. He’s always going to get there,” Mahela Jayawardene said, highlighting the batter’s ability to deliver when it matters most.
While acknowledging that consistency is an area Suryakumar himself would look to refine, Mahela Jayawardene was quick to praise his leadership during high-pressure moments.

“Yes, consistency is something he would want to improve, but the way he led the team and kept everything together was outstanding,” he noted. “There were some tough decisions during the tournament, and he handled them brilliantly. Hats off to him,” he added, underlining the maturity Suryakumar displayed throughout the campaign.

Jayawardene also reserved special praise for Jasprit Bumrah, describing him as a game-changer whose preparation and mindset set him apart. “Jassi is always a special player. It’s not just his skill, but the work ethic and the thinking behind his execution that makes him unique,” he said.
Reflecting on Bumrah’s World Cup performances, Mahela Jayawardene emphasised his impact in crunch situations.

“The way he delivered in key moments was exceptional. Having worked with him at Mumbai Indians, I know how much planning goes into every ball he bowls,” he added. Looking ahead to IPL 2026, Mahela Jayawardene confirmed that Mumbai Indians have given their World Cup-winning players an extended break to recover before joining the squad. “It’s a long season, and we want our players fresh. They’ll join us next week and have a solid training block before the first game,” he explained.
With a balanced approach to workload management and strong leadership within the squad, the Mumbai Indians appear well-prepared for another competitive IPL season.
