Mumbai Indians have announced that Mahela Jayawardene will step down as their head coach, bringing an end to a decade-long association with the franchise. The Sri Lankan cricket legend leaves behind a significant legacy, having played a key role in shaping the team’s identity and contributing to its success across multiple seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Jayawardene enjoyed two stints as Mumbai Indians’ head coach, first from 2017 to 2022 and then from 2024 to 2026. During his tenure, the franchise won three IPL titles, establishing itself as one of the competition’s most successful teams. Beyond the trophies, his calm leadership, tactical understanding and emphasis on teamwork helped strengthen the culture within the Mumbai Indians camp.
Mrs Nita M. Ambani, speaking on behalf of the franchise, praised Jayawardene’s contribution and commitment over the years. โMahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us.โ

In 2022, Jayawardene moved into the role of Global Head of Performance, overseeing the expansion of the Mumbai Indians brand across international T20 leagues. He worked closely with coaching teams to establish a common cricketing philosophy across the franchise’s global teams.
During this period, Mumbai Indians Women, MI New York and MI Emirates each secured a title, further strengthening the franchise’s international presence. Jayawardene’s departure as head coach marks the end of an important chapter, but his contribution to the wider Mumbai Indians family remains a significant part of its history.
