Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals, ending his 74-match career for Australia in the format. However, the all-rounder will continue to be available for T20 Internationals, shifting his focus entirely to the shortest format of the game. Stoinis is a nearly-decade long pillar of the Australia limited-over outfit, starting back in 2015 from England, and also making his debut against that opposition at Old Trafford.

Not a bad irony as he played the first of his three T20Is on that trip. It was only the next year that Stoinis really made a statement on the ODI stage, hitting an incredible knock of 146 not out against New Zealand at Eden Park and picking up three wickets as well. The all-round performance stands out as one of the brightest moments in his career and announced him as a match-winner for Australia.

He played important roles in several key tournaments over the years, notably in Australia’s victorious 2023 ODI World Cup campaign. His contribution to white-ball cricket was acknowledged in 2018-19 when he was named Australia’s ODI Cricketer of the Year.

Stoinis explained why he was taking himself out of ODI cricket, “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey and I am grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. It is not an easy decision, but I think it is the right time to really focus on the next chapter of my career.

Stoinis is celebrated by Australian Head Coach Andrew McDonald for his contributions, as they say he has been an essential component of Australia’s ODI setup since the last ten years and has not only been a valuable player but an exceptional person in the group: “Natural leader. His absence will be felt in ODIs.
