Mumbai Indians’ head coach, Mark Boucher, appeared visibly agitated during the ongoing IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. His frustration stemmed from a perplexing scenario involving substitutes. Initially, Rohit Sharma substituted for Piyush Chawla, who had completed his overs, but when Chawla returned, Sharma remained on the field, now replacing Nuwan Thushara.

This led to confusion among the umpires, who questioned Mumbai Indians about the substitution protocol. Mark Boucher’s dissatisfaction was evident as he engaged in a heated discussion with the umpire, highlighting the need for clarity and adherence to regulations in such situations.

Meanwhile, the game, reduced to 16 overs per side due to rain, saw Kolkata Knight Riders opting to bat first under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. Despite losing early wickets, Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana’s partnership steered them back on track. Andre Russell’s aggressive cameo further bolstered their innings, enabling them to post a respectable total of 157 runs.

In response, Mumbai Indians commenced their chase energetically, with openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma setting a brisk tempo. Their partnership laid a strong foundation, with Kishan’s aggressive stroke play complementing Sharma’s composed approach. However, Kishan’s dismissal to Sunil Narine halted their momentum after a promising start.

Nevertheless, Mumbai Indians, already out of playoff contention, remain in a favourable position to secure victory, buoyed by their solid start. The task now falls on Sharma and the middle order to capitalize on the platform laid by the openers and steer the team towards a successful chase at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
