Mark Butcher, former England cricketer, has cast doubt over England’s chances in the upcoming Champions Trophy, citing their lack of experience in 50-over cricket. Led by Jos Buttler, England has struggled in ODIs since the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, winning only four of their last 14 matches. Their recent 0-3 series defeat in India, Brendon McCullum’s first as white-ball head coach, further highlights their struggles.

In the Champions Trophy, England will face Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa—teams that defeated them in the previous World Cup group stage. Reflecting on England’s recent performances, Butcher noted their naivety in the format.

“The first thing that struck me in the first two ODIs was just how naive our cricket looked in the 50-over game. And why? Because we barely play it,” Mark Butcher said on the Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast. He emphasized the stark difference in pacing a 50-over match compared to a T20 game. “The tempo isn’t just about playing aggressively all the time; it’s about knowing when to accelerate and when to consolidate. That kind of awareness only comes from playing a lot of ODIs.”

Mark Butcher compared England’s current predicament to the 1990s when they played only a handful of 50-over matches each summer, often against teams like India, Australia, and the West Indies, who had far more experience in the format.

“Back then, the opposition players had three times as many ODI caps as us. We’re back in that situation now, where India’s players, for example, have played twice or three times the number of ODIs as someone like Jos Buttler,” he explained.

One of England’s key struggles in India was their inexperienced bowling attack, particularly Gus Atkinson, who conceded 139 runs in two matches. Atkinson made his ODI debut in 2023 after playing just two List A games. While Butcher believes Atkinson has potential, he doubts the pacer will have an immediate impact in the Champions Trophy.

“A lot of our guys will improve with time, and Gus Atkinson is no exception. He’s faced his first real challenge after finding cricket relatively easy so far. This experience will toughen him up,” Mark Butcher said. “But if we’re talking about winning the Champions Trophy in a few weeks, let’s be honest—it’s unlikely. The team simply doesn’t have the experience, skill, or tactical nous required for 50-over cricket. It’s not just about going full throttle; it’s about knowing when to adapt.”

With England’s lack of exposure to the format and their recent struggles, Butcher’s concerns highlight the tough road ahead for Buttler’s side in the Champions Trophy.
