Young Indian sensation Shubman Gill had a close call on Day 2 of the third Test against New Zealand in Mumbai, surviving a potential dismissal after a rare fielding error by Mark Chapman. Known for his agility and safe hands, Chapman made an uncharacteristic blunder that gifted Gill a much-needed lifeline, shifting momentum back in India’s favour.
Starting the day at 86 for four, India’s hopes rested on Gill and the explosive Rishabh Pant to counter New Zealand’s bowling attack. Both batters found their rhythm early, with sharp footwork and timing that left the bowlers scrambling. In an effort to break the building partnership, Kiwi captain Tom Latham introduced off-spinner Glenn Phillips into the attack.

Glenn Phillips’ tactic nearly paid off when he floated a tempting delivery, luring Gill to advance down the pitch and attempt a lofted shot. However, the shot didn’t go as planned, and the ball hung in the air long enough to create an easy-catching opportunity at long-on.

Unfortunately for New Zealand, Chapman failed to take the catch, dropping what should have been a straightforward dismissal. This costly error allowed Gill to continue his innings, adding further pressure on the visitors. Earlier, India had bowled New Zealand out for 235, with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar delivering a fierce performance.

Though India lost early wickets, including Jaiswal and Kohli, the partnership between Gill and Pant brought stability and lifted the team’s score. As the pair capitalized on every scoring opportunity, New Zealand’s dropped chance only amplified the damage, with both batters reaching their half-centuries. By the time of this report, India had rallied to 155 for four, with Gill and Pant unbeaten on 51 and 50, respectively, putting the hosts in a strong position.
