Former Australian cricketer, Mark Waugh is unhappy with Glenn Maxwell’s batting position as he feels that latter deserves to come higher up in limited-overs cricket. Maxwell batted at No.7 in the deciding game of the three-match ODI series in Hobart against South Africa on November 11 and scored 35 off 27 balls to. It was the eighth time in 87 matches that the 30-year-old explosive batsman batted t that number.

At No.7, Glenn has maintained a phenomenal average of 46.75 which is way better than his overall average of 32.02 but yet Waugh is not convinced. When he came out to bat in the Hobart ODI, Australia needed 95 runs off 52 balls with centurion Shaun Marsh back into the dug-out. The hosts managed 54 runs from there on of which 35 came off Maxwell’s bat. When he departed in the 49th over, Australia still needed 43 runs but could add just 2 runs in the last nine balls.

Speaking to Sky Sports Radio, Waugh said: “Maxwell, I don’t know what his best position is, but I’m pretty sure it’s not No.7. I don’t really like him at seven, I think he’s the sort of player you’ve got to make feel wanted.” Maxwell batted at No. 4 in the one-off T20I against the UAE recently; then he batted at No.5 against Pakistan in the recent three-game T20I series and was sent in at No.6 in the first two ODIs against South Africa. It seems that with each passing match, his batting position has been demoted.

Maxwell could manage just 61 runs in the three games against South Africa and failed to pick a single wicket with the ball. Overall, he has 2,242 runs and 45 scalps in ODIs.

Talking about him further, Mark said, “To me, it just looks like when you’re batting him at seven, he thinks, ‘I’m better than that, ‘I shouldn’t be batting seven’. I’m not sure about his position. He was obviously disappointing throughout the series as well.”
