In a significant shake-up to Australia’s Test setup, Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the playing XI for the upcoming first Test against the West Indies, while senior batter Steve Smith has been ruled out due to injury. Chief selector George Bailey confirmed that 19-year-old Sam Konstas and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis will replace the duo in the squad.

Labuschagne’s omission doesn’t come as a complete surprise. The top-order batter has struggled to find form in recent months, with his last Test century coming back in 2023. In a bid to fix Australia’s opening woes, Labuschagne was promoted to open alongside Usman Khawaja during the World Test Championship (WTC) final, but could only manage 17 and 22 in his two innings, both times getting starts but failing to convert.

“Marnus at his best is a vital asset,” said george Bailey, speaking to ESPNcricinfo. “But he acknowledges that his recent performances haven’t been up to the standards expected—either by us or himself. We’re continuing to work with him to help him rediscover the key elements of his game. We value his ability and expect him to bounce back positively.”

Sam Konstas, who made a strong impression in his home debut series against India with his attacking strokeplay, has earned a recall. He was not part of the squad for the Sri Lanka tour, where selectors experimented with Travis Head as an opener.

Steve Smith, meanwhile, suffered a compound dislocation of his right little finger while attempting a catch off Temba Bavuma in the WTC final. Bailey confirmed that the medical team has advised more recovery time. “Steve needs another week to allow the wound to heal fully. We’ll reassess him after that.”

Josh Inglis, who scored a century during his brief Test stint in Sri Lanka, has been backed to deliver again. “He showed great intent and composure in Sri Lanka. We’re excited to see both Josh and Sam build on their early promise.”

The final playing XI will be announced closer to the Test, which begins June 25.
