Marnus Labuschagne is gearing up for what he believes will be another classic contest as Australia prepare to take on South Africa in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s. The Australian middle-order mainstay, who was part of the squad that dominated India in the 2023 final, spoke highly of the Proteas and the significance of competing on such a historic stage.

“South Africa have been a very strong side throughout this WTC cycle,” Marnus Labuschagne told the ICC. “They’ve got a balanced squad on paper, with some seriously talented players. It’s going to be a tough challenge for us. Playing at Lord’s always brings a sense of history and occasion — it’s going to be a special week and hopefully a great game.”

Labuschagne, who was born in South Africa, added that the WTC has breathed new life into the longest format, giving each Test greater context and meaning.

“This tournament has really added something extra to Test cricket,” he said. “Every match counts towards something, and it keeps players and fans engaged throughout the two-year cycle. Winning it two years ago against India was incredibly special, and now having a chance to defend that title — it’s a big motivator.”

While the likes of India, England, and Australia continue to carry the commercial weight of Test cricket, Labuschagne stressed the importance of all nations maintaining strong red-ball systems to keep the format thriving globally.

From a personal standpoint, Labuschagne’s WTC form hasn’t quite lived up to his earlier exploits. After bursting onto the scene with consistent big scores and becoming the world’s top-ranked Test batter in late 2021, his numbers have dipped in the current cycle. He averages 28.33 this time around with just one century, though he did play vital knocks against India during the last home series.

Still, Marnus Labuschagne has left no stone unturned in preparing for the final. He’s been honing his skills in familiar English conditions with Glamorgan — a county he’s developed a strong bond with over the past six years.

“Playing for Glamorgan feels like home now. I’ve built great friendships here, and being part of this setup allows me to slot in smoothly whenever needed,” he said. “That relationship makes it easier to coordinate things like preparation tours. It’s a key part of why I feel ready for the WTC final.”

With the stakes high and history on the line, Labuschagne and Australia are eyeing another shot at Test glory — this time against his country of birth, at the most iconic venue of them all.
