Sri Lankan quick Matheesha Pathirana has finally joined Kolkata Knight Riders, giving the struggling franchise a much-needed boost in IPL 2026. KKR shared pictures and videos of his arrival on social media, and the timing could hardly be better for a team that is rooted to the bottom of the points table and desperate for a turnaround.

Pathirana had been out of action after suffering a calf strain during the T20 World Cup earlier this year. The pacer has now completed rehabilitation, cleared his fitness assessment with Sri Lanka Cricket, and secured the required no-objection certificate before linking up with the KKR squad ahead of their clash against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.
Despite his return, KKR are expected to take a cautious approach before rushing him into the playing XI. Pathirana will likely go through a couple of training sessions first, allowing the medical staff to assess his match fitness before making a final decision on his availability.

Bought for Rs 18 crore at the last IPL auction, Pathirana was always expected to miss the opening phase of the tournament because of his injury. There had been hope that he would return by the Gujarat Titans game in Ahmedabad, but his comeback has been slightly delayed.

His arrival comes at a crucial time for KKR, whose campaign has been derailed largely by an underperforming bowling attack. The absence of Mustafizur Rahman, along with injuries to frontline pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, has left the unit short on experience and penetration. Varun Chakravarthy’s poor form has only added to the problem, forcing Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy to carry most of the spin-bowling load.

Ajinkya Rahane’s side has managed just one point from six matches, collected in a rain-hit game against Punjab Kings. Heavy defeats, including the failure to defend 220 in Mumbai, a big loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, and back-to-back setbacks against Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans, have exposed KKR’s bowling shortcomings. In that context, Pathirana’s return could prove vital to keeping their IPL 2026 campaign alive.
