Watching Virat Kohli elegantly drive the world’s fastest bowlers has inspired an entire generation. The former Indian captain’s discipline, relentless passion, and unmatched consistency have set new standards in world cricket. At 36, Kohli continues to be the benchmark for professionalism — not only through his hundreds and fitness revolution but also through how he handles failure. His influence extends far beyond runs and records, reaching players across continents who see in him both excellence and humanity.

One such cricketer is Australia’s Matt Renshaw. Ahead of the second ODI in Adelaide, the 29-year-old opened up about how Kohli’s rare failure in Perth helped him gain perspective.

“I was a bit nervous before batting on my ODI debut,” Matt Renshaw admitted. “But when I saw Virat Kohli get out for a duck — and he’s the best in this format — I told myself, ‘It’s okay to fail.’ In cricket, you always chase perfection, but no one has ever achieved it. So, there’s no point trying too hard.”

Kohli, who has amassed 14,181 ODI runs, returned to international cricket after a six-month break but couldn’t make an impact in Perth. On a pitch with extra bounce, he looked rusty and fell for an eight-ball duck, edging a Mitchell Starc delivery to point. It was a frustrating dismissal for the Indian superstar, but it served as an unexpected source of comfort for Renshaw — a reminder that even the greats can falter.

The debutant made the most of his chance, remaining unbeaten on 21 off 24 balls as Australia comfortably chased down India’s 131 in a rain-shortened 26-over match. Renshaw’s calmness at the crease reflected a mature cricketer who has learned to balance perspective and performance.

Having first debuted in Tests at just 20, Renshaw’s career trajectory has been anything but straightforward. After an impressive start against Pakistan and India in 2017, he lost his spot and endured nearly five years outside the Test setup. His comeback in early 2023 didn’t go as planned, but consistent domestic performances have now earned him another opportunity.

Matt Renshaw credits his personal growth, especially fatherhood, for his new outlook. “Having two kids has changed everything. Cricket isn’t my whole world anymore,” he said. “When I go home, I’m changing nappies, putting kids to bed — it keeps things real. I even hide cricket apps and news so I don’t overthink performances. If I get the rest of my life in order, cricket will take care of itself.”

India and Australia now head to Adelaide for the second ODI — a venue that has often brought out the best in Virat Kohli. For both teams, it’s a chance to reset — one searching for redemption, the other for consistency.
