Mayank Agarwal recalls how Rohit Sharma helped Overcome Poor Form

Amid the lockdown, Indian opening batsman Mayank Agarwal spoke with player turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar that was hosted by ESPNCricinfo. During the interaction, Mayank revealed how Rohit Sharma helped him overcome a poor run of games during the West Indies tour.

Mayank Agarwal was part of the Indian team that played West Indies for two Test matches back  in August 2019. During the same, Mayank Agarwal wasn’t at his best and didn’t play according to the high standards he sets for himself. The opener managed to register one fifty-plus once on the tour. Mayank couldn’t score many runs in as his only 50- score came in the last match of the two-Tests.

Mayank said, “That was exactly the feeling after the West Indies tour, I said to myself man what is happening? You had a good start and you planned and planned. I remember Rohit Sharma was sitting next to me, he told me that there is a difference when you play your first series and your second series, he told me that there is a certain expectation from me to perform.”

He added, “But he told me not to add more pressure on myself to perform, he advised to play like it’s my first match, I have taken this advice and I try to follow it every time.”

Agarwal’s last appearance for the national team came when the Indian team traveled to New Zealand earlier this year. The Men in blue played a two-match Test series against the Black Caps for the ICC World test Championship.

During the NZ tour, Mayank managed to accumulate 102 runs in four innings. However, overall poor performance form the Indians resulted in a 2-0 loss to the Kiwis.
