The infamous Mankaded dismissal of Jos Buttler, which occurred during the match between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab, has gathered a lot of controversy in just one day. As soon as it happened, the cricket fraternity got divided into two half, one is with Ashwin’s act and the other one is not.

Last night in Jaipur, KXIP skipper Ravichandran Ashwin stopped before leaving the ball and caught Buttler out of the crease to run him out. This is one controversial way to dismiss a batsman but it is now under the laws of cricket since 2017 and no prior warning is required in this age of cricket.

Meanwhile, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) gave their verdict on this dismissal. MCC is cricket’s legislative body and they make all the laws and rules of this game. Hence, their saying is expected to be most appropriate on this issue.

MCC feels Buttler could have been given out or not out as it was subjected to the interpretation of when Ashwin would have been expected to release the ball.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) quoted MCC as saying

“Yesterday’s incident could have been ruled out or not out depending on how ‘the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball’ is interpreted.”

MCC mentioned if Ashwin deliberately waited for Buttler to leave his ground, then it is against the spirit.

“Some feel that Ashwin delayed his action to allow Buttler the chance to leave his ground and that Buttler was in his ground when he expected the ball to be released. If it was a deliberate delay, that would be unfair and against the Spirit of Cricket. Ashwin claims this not to be the case,” they added.

“The TV umpire had to make a decision and, under the Law (and indeed ICC’s interpretation of them, which clarifies the expected moment of release as when the arm reaches its highest point), it was understandable how he opted to give Buttler out.”

On the back of this timely dismissal, Kings XI Punjab made a comeback in the game and defeated Rajasthan Royals by 14 runs. The cricket experts have their different opinions about this incident, where some are with Ashwin and others are with Buttler.
