Australia captain Meg Lanning praised her team that defeat India and won their fifth title, and first on home soil. They lost to India in the series opener and bounced back brilliantly. However, Lanning was particularly happy about how the team performed together especially after the injuries sidelines of Tayla Vlaeminick and Ellyse Perry.
“I’m just really proud of this group of players and staff. We’ve had everything thrown at us, ups and downs. It was tough, definitely, especially after we lost that first game. There was a lot of expectation on us, inside and out. Definitely some tough times in there but we stuck with each other, had each other’s backs,” she said. “Coming in they (the injured players) were a big part of our plans, we had to go to Plan B and C.”
However, it was not easy as they needed to beat New Zealand, a tough competitor and also South Africa in the semi-final who were unbeaten in the group stage.
“This tournament was always going to be massive, we had our ups and downs throughout and everything was thrown at us. To be able to come through and have the complete performance on the biggest stage, it’s something that’s pretty amazing,” she was quoted as saying by the ICC. “The New Zealand game and the semi-final, that’s the most nervous and sick I’ve felt playing cricket. To get through that, coming in to the final, everyone was a little on edge but it just happened.”

However, it was a record attendance on women’s day in the MCG on the International Women’s Day as the final witnessed the attendance of 86,174 people and the Meg Lanning kept her calm along with the teammates and pulled up a convincing win.
“This day is incredible, we couldn’t have dreamed of this. When the organisers said they wanted to get that many people for the Final, I must admit I was a bit sceptical. But you wanted to be there and be involved. There was such a big build-up, all the outside pressure and expectation — we wanted to come and win this tournament but it was something else. The way we were able to react and deal with that was testament to the group — this day is certainly the best of my career so far,” Meg Lanning concluded.
