Mohammed Siraj found himself at the centre of controversy during the second day of the pink-ball Test between India and Australia in Adelaide. The fiery Indian pacer gave a spirited send-off to Travis Head after dismissing him with a low full toss, leading to boos from the Adelaide crowd. Reports suggest that the ICC may fine both players for their heated exchange on the field.

Travis Head later claimed that his gestures were misunderstood by Siraj, explaining that he was merely applauding the bowler for an excellent delivery. However, Siraj firmly denied this, adding fuel to the post-match debates. Former Australian captain Michael Clarke believes the incident has added an extra layer of excitement to the series, particularly ahead of the third Test in Brisbane starting December 14.

“I hope it’s play on. They’ll probably get a fine, just a slap on the wrist, and we move forward,” Michael Clarke said on the Big Sports Breakfast show. “It didn’t look great, but in the context of the game, it added to the theatre of the day. Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head have spiced things up.”

Clarke also commented on Siraj’s newfound “villain” status in the eyes of the Australian crowd, predicting a charged atmosphere when the pacer takes the field in Brisbane.

“Every series needs a villain, and Mohammed Siraj has become that character. He’s likely to face a hostile reception, which will only add spice to the series. But I’d be disappointed if anyone was suspended; it’s all part of the game,” Michael Clarke remarked.

The former skipper also criticized Siraj for his exuberant appeals for LBW decisions without consulting the umpire. “Siraj runs down the pitch celebrating LBWs without looking at the umpire. It’s surprising the ICC hasn’t fined him for this yet. I remember when Brett Lee used to do it, and he was warned multiple times. Siraj should be more mindful of this,” Michael Clarke noted.

He concluded by advising Siraj to temper his send-offs. “Travis Head just scored 140 runs. If you’re going to give a send-off, maybe save it for someone who’s made five, not 140,” Clarke quipped, adding a touch of humor to his critique.

As the series moves to Brisbane, the stakes are higher, with both teams locked at 1-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Siraj’s fiery persona might just become one of the defining narratives of this gripping contest.
