Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan called Joe Root an exceptional player, stating that he believes the England ace can get close to, if not overtake, Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in Test cricket. Joe Root scored his 32nd Test century in the recent outing against the West Indies at Trent Bridge, nudging him past Shivnarine Chanderpaul into eighth place on the list of all-time run-scorers in Test cricket.
Joe Root now has 11,940 runs from 142 Test matches, while Sachin Tendulkar holds the record with 15,921 runs in a career lasting 200 Test matches. As Root continues edging closer to Tendulkar’s record, Vaughan believes that he can break this long-standing achievement.

Michael Vaughan was confident about Root’s capabilities, and he wrote in his Telegraph column, “Joe Root will become England’s leading run-scorer in the next few months and is so special that he really could overtake Sachin Tendulkar eventually. But the way they are scoring runs now is impressive; it’s not reckless. They’re playing with good sense and control.”.
Vaughan also went on to appreciate Root’s strategic play: “As the rock of this team, Root’s contribution is key. I love how he kept his reverse-scoop in reserve until he was past 100 and England’s lead was substantial.”.
Added to Tendulkar’s record, he is also inching closer to ex-England batter Alastair Cook for other records. He will soon overtake Cook for the most Test hundreds as an English player, currently needing just one more to equal Cook’s 33 centuries. He is also 532 runs shy of taking over from Cook as England’s leading Test run-scorer.
