Former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Simon Doull believe an intriguing leadership dynamic could be brewing within Chennai Super Kings, especially with Sanju Samson alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. During a discussion on Cricbuzz, Vaughan raised a pointed question about whether Gaikwad might feel pressure from Samson’s leadership credentials.

“What about the captain, Gaikwad? Do you think he feels threatened [by Samson]?” Vaughan asked. Doull’s response was direct. “Absolutely,” he said. Vaughan went on to elaborate on the situation, highlighting the unique pressure Gaikwad could be facing. “So that’s another kind of dynamic that you’re looking at,” he explained.

“[One of the league’s] youngest captains Gaikwad… you’re backing him as captain. But at the same time, you bring in Sanju, who’s a very good captain and a wicketkeeper. And we’ve had a keeper-captain before who did incredibly well. So you’re asking Gaikwad to lead while knowing there’s a potential successor in the squad.”

The reference, of course, is to MS Dhoni, whose legacy as CSK’s long-time wicketkeeper-captain continues to shape the franchise’s leadership blueprint.

Samson’s credentials as a leader are well established. During his time with Rajasthan Royals, he emerged as one of the more consistent captains in the league, even guiding the side to the IPL 2022 final. His arrival at CSK, therefore, brings both experience and expectation.

However, Samson’s start to IPL 2026 hasn’t been ideal, with a couple of low scores adding early pressure. Simon Doull acknowledged the challenge of settling into a new setup while trying to justify the faith shown by the franchise. “Tough challenge for him… when you want to play for a certain side and put on a show,” Doull said.

He also pointed out the emotional and professional weight Samson carries, especially playing in familiar southern conditions.

“He is a Kerala boy… he wants to put on a show. The pressure is enormous, not just because of the trade, but also because of what the franchise might see in him for the future,” he added. Despite the slow start, Doull believes Samson has enough recent form to draw confidence from, particularly his performances leading into the tournament.
