Former English captain Michael Vaughan feels English wicketkeeper Jos Buttler is that X-factor cricketer who is necessary for the World Cup-winning team.

Buttler was the Player of the Tournament at the end of the five-match home ODI series against Australia while he played a magnificent match-winning knock of unbeaten 110-run in the fifth ODI at Manchester to rescue his team from a dead-end situation and secured the clean-sweep of the series.

Vaughan is hopeful on Buttler and the English cricket team for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted by England and Wales, as he believes that the wicketkeeper-batsman will be a key player for that big tournament.

Vaughan told BBC Radio’s Test Match Special, “I look at the England side and Buttler is the one. Teams that win trophies have X-factor cricketers. He’s right up there. I’ve got everything crossed that he doesn’t pick up an injury. If he’s fit next year, they’ve got the best chance they have ever had.”

While Buttler is generally an attacking batsman, he played a very different kind of innings at Manchester. Chasing down 206 runs, England was on 114/8 and on verge of the defeat but Buttler’s patience unbeaten 110 runs off 122 balls sealed a thrilling one-wicket victory for them.

Talking about that innings, Vaughan said, “What he provides to the team is that calmness. Whenever he is out there in the middle, he reads the game better than most. He knows and the team know that the opposition are scared of him more than most.”

While England dominated in the whole series, including scoring the world-record 481 runs during the third ODI at Trent Bridge, Vaughan feels the fifth ODI was a special game for England.

The former English captain said, “Forget the 481 at Trent Bridge and the other hammerings — this game is one England will take more from. For them to get over the line today — in a real close game after Australia were favourites — this means more.”
