Former England captain Michael Vaughan was all praise for Shubman Gill after the Indian skipper’s sensational double century in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Gill, under immense pressure, rose to the occasion and delivered a career-defining knock of 269 runs from 387 balls, embellished with 30 crisp boundaries and three towering sixes. For Vaughan, it wasn’t just about the runs—it was about the temperament and clarity with which Gill carried himself during a high-pressure innings.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Vaughan acknowledged that while the pitch at Edgbaston was favorable for batting, many still faltered—England, for instance, lost early wickets due to poor shot selection. What stood out for him was Gill’s ability to resist the urge to overattack and instead bat with unwavering concentration and discipline.

“When you watch a player bat that well, the immediate reaction is to talk about the pitch—yes, it’s flat. But when England went out, they lost three wickets due to poor decision-making. Gill, on the other hand, made none. He showed tremendous discipline, dedication, and focus. His shot selection, his control, his patience—it was a masterclass,” Michael Vaughan said.

Michael Vaughan went on to place Gill’s innings among the finest he’s witnessed. What made it even more special was the context—India trailing 0-1 in the series, Gill captaining for just the second time in Tests, and facing growing criticism about his form in overseas conditions. To emerge from such a backdrop and deliver a match-defining double century, Vaughan noted, was a testament to Gill’s growing stature.

“This wasn’t just a big score; it was leadership under fire,” Michael Vaughan continued. “He not only batted his team into a dominant position but also set up the bowlers beautifully by giving them a massive total to defend. And then India responded with three early wickets. That’s the impact of a true captain’s knock.”

Vaughan was also impressed by the technical adjustments Gill has made, particularly to counter the LBW trap that previously troubled him. England bowlers did target that area, but Gill’s compact technique and balanced footwork kept him solid.

“England tried to exploit that old vulnerability to LBW, but Gill’s technique is at a point now where he can say, ‘Bring it on.’ He’s assured, confident, and in command. This is his moment—to not just build numbers but carve a legacy, both as a top-order batter and a future leader of Indian cricket,” Michael Vaughan concluded.
