Former England captain Michael Vaughan has sparked debate by naming Chris Gayle as the greatest overseas player in IPL history, overlooking big names such as AB de Villiers, Kieron Pollard, Rashid Khan, Sunil Narine and Shane Warne. Vaughan’s pick came during a Cricbuzz video on X, where he backed the former Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings star ahead of several modern IPL greats.

Gayle’s record in the Indian Premier League makes a strong case. In 142 matches between 2009 and 2021, the explosive left-hander piled up 4,965 runs in 141 innings, won the Orange Cap twice and set standards that still look untouched.
He remains the league’s leading six-hitter with 357 maximums and also owns the highest individual score in IPL history — an unforgettable unbeaten 175. He even chipped in with 18 wickets during his IPL career. That said, the conversation around the best overseas player is always crowded with elite contenders.

AB de Villiers scored 5,162 runs in 184 IPL matches for Delhi Capitals and RCB, while Pollard contributed 3,412 runs and 69 wickets in 189 games for Mumbai Indians across a career that defined big-match temperament.

Pollard’s impact went beyond numbers. He played a key role in the Mumbai Indians’ title-winning campaigns under Rohit Sharma, including the 2013 final against the Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens. In that game, he smashed an unbeaten 60 off 32 balls to lift MI to 148/9, a total that proved enough in the end. He also took the wicket of Ravichandran Ashwin and was named Player of the Match.

After retiring as a player, Pollard transitioned to MI’s support staff and continues to be part of the franchise as the batting coach in IPL 2026, underscoring his long-standing influence on the Mumbai Indians setup.
