Michael Vaughan has voiced concerns over Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s form heading into the eagerly awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The two experienced Indian batters struggled in their recent Test series against New Zealand, where India suffered a historic whitewash at home. Rohit managed only 91 runs across three matches, while Kohli tallied 93.
For India to stand a chance against Australia in the upcoming five-Test series, both players need to find their best form. Vaughan, however, is doubtful about how well Rohit and Kohli can handle Australia’s formidable bowling lineup, led by Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.
“The one thing that India are going to require to win here in Australia is Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli getting big runs and getting back to their best. I hope they do, I fear they won’t,” Michael Vaughan remarked in an interview with Fox Sports, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

Michael Vaughan also pointed out the impact of age on both players, which may be contributing to their recent dip in form. Nonetheless, he emphasized that their performance will be crucial if India hopes to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
“I fear that they might just be over the edge. When you face an Australian attack that is among the greatest in their home conditions, you need to bring both solid technique and an incredible mindset,” he said.
Reflecting on India’s previous tour of Australia, Vaughan highlighted Rishabh Pant’s memorable performance at the Gabba in the 2020-21 series. Pant’s unbeaten 89 played a pivotal role in India’s historic chase of 328, ending Australia’s 32-year unbeaten streak at the venue. Notably, Kohli missed the last three Tests of that series, which made India’s victory even more remarkable.
“In the last series, they won without Virat Kohli chasing down that target at the Gabba. Australia hadn’t lost there in 32 years. But there’s real concern around Kohli right now. Missing that full toss to Mitchell Santner isn’t like him. You’re looking at a player fighting for form,” Michael Vaughan observed.

Virat Kohli has averaged 33 in Tests over the past five years, far below his best. As India seeks to secure a place in the next World Test Championship (WTC) final, both Kohli and Rohit’s performances in Australia will be crucial in this challenging five-match series.
