Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has once again managed to create a storm on social media with his latest tweet, where he compares Indian megastar Virat Kohli with England’s star batsman Joe Root. Vaughan pointed out that Root’s performance in the current second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s was out of the box as Root scored a very important pressure century.
With that century, Root now has 33 Test tons, which puts him joint-tenth on the all-time list of batsmen who have scored most hundreds in Test cricket. Michael Vaughan did note that Root has now gone ahead of Kohli in quite a few important statistics within Test cricket: total runs, centuries, and average. He, though, did mention that Root has scored more Test runs than Kohli. While Root is standing with 12,131 runs at an average of 50.33, Kohli is somewhere behind with 8,848 runs at an average of 49.15.
Michael Vaughan also added that Root has gone well over twice as many half-centuries compared to the Indian maestro. His tweet, captioned “Morning India,” didn’t sit too well with Kohli’s legion of fans, who quickly jumped to his defense by citing Kohli’s overall brilliance and pointing at Root’s struggles against India in their recent four-match Test series.

That itself testifies to his illustrious career compared to Kohli’s 113 Tests so far. Kohli, with 29 Test centuries so far, may try hard in the coming series where India will take on Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia.

Meanwhile, news comes off the bat and ball of the England young gun, Gus Atkinson, in the second Test against Sri Lanka. After an excellent West Indies series as a bowler, Atkinson was excellent in getting 118 to bail England out of trouble when they were at 130/4.

Being the enforcer he has proved to be throughout, he managed perfect partnerships first with Matthew Potts and then with Olly Stone to guide England to a respectable 427 in the first innings, thus stamping his all-round credentials in international cricket. The debate between Root and Kohli has only increased the passion amongst both fans and pundits alike as this is an ongoing battle between two of the finest modern-day batters of their time.
