Playing their first match at the home ground, Ferozshah Kotla Stadium, a new look Delhi Daredevils kept the mighty Punjab team down to only 143/8 runs in the first innings. Delhi captain Gautam Gambhir won the toss and chose to field first. His fresh bowling line-up bowled exceptionally well to keep KXIP down through the innings. Now the home team has to chase 144 runs to get back on winning ways.

Liam Plunkett

The greatest surprise tonight was not Chris Gayle playing, it was the team changes from Delhi Daredevils. At the toss, Ashwin informed that Gayle suffering from body soreness will not play and David Miller was included in his place. Gambhir mentioned two major changes. Jason Roy and Chris Morris sitting out to bring in Liam Plunkett and Daniel Christian.

There was more in store, however. With plenty versions of the playing XI flying out, there was complete chaos regarding what the actual playing XI of Delhi was. It was later learned that they had five changes in total. DD brought in Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan and Prithvi Shaw in place of Harshal Patel, Vijay Shankar, and Shahbaz Nadeem.

Punjab opening without Gayle faced their first opening failure of the IPL as Finch was out for only two runs. Plunkett and Avesh built the early pressure and kept the run-rate down. In-form KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal tried their best to restore the KXIP scoring rate. Liam Plunkett snicked out both as he registered best debut figures for a DD player.

Yuvraj Singh – KXIP.

It was up to Yuvraj Singh and Karun Nair then to resurrect the falling innings. DD bowlers did not give any respite and kept striking at regular intervals. Nair top-scored with 34 from 26 balls while Miller on his return scored 26 from 19 balls.

Trent Boult with 2/21 earned the purple cap. Plunkett ended up with 3/17 in his four overs. Mishra, who had the catch of Miller dropped on his bowling by Shaw, had the figures of 33/0 on his name.

New look Daredevils have a great shot at upsetting the Kings XI Punjab tonight.
