The fiery Australian speedster, Mitchell Starc has found a legal way to claim $1.53 million which he lost after missing last year’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to injury. According to a report in Fairfax Media on Tuesday, Starc will be starting the legal procedure in the Victorian County Court against the insurers of his lucrative deal to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in one of India’s biggest money-spinners.
Starc didn’t bowl a single delivery in IPL 2018 after he was ruled out following an injury during the series against South Africa last year, during which the ball-tampering scandal took place which led to the bans of Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft. The pacer suffered an injury in his calf in the second Test at Port Elizabeth before he succumbed to a fracture of his right tibial bone in the third Test in Cape Town.

In order to insure his IPL season, Starc had hired the services Lloyd’s of London, a long-running insurance market, and bought a policy for $1.53m policy, which was effective if he missed the IPL season due to an injury.
According to the writ petition, Starc paid a premium of $97,920 to be covered between February 27 and March 31 in 2018, when the tournament ended. Before all the documents were signed, the pacer undergone medical examinations conducted by the insurers.
Describing the same, Writ said, “The parties have exchanged correspondence about the plaintiff’s claim which culminated in a final response from the defendant’s representative in the form of an email sent on 22 November 2018. That email confirmed the defendant’s contention that the plaintiff is not entitled to the total disablement benefit.”
