The previous head coach of New Zealand cricket team, Mike Hesson has recently claimed that the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni is a genius in terms of chasing a total.
After a struggling 2018, the former Indian captain and the present Indian limited-overs wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni has returned to his old familiar batting form at the very beginning of the New year (2019) during the recently concluded three-match ODI series against the hosts Australia. He played the half-century knocks in all the three ODIs of that series as he scored 193 runs in that series with the average of 193.00 and won the Player of the Series award. In the last two ODIs, Dhoni successfully finished the games after coming to the crease at the tight situations.

Recently, taking about Dhoni, Hesson praised the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman and said that he was a genius in terms of chasing a total.
Hesson told CricketNext, “Dhoni’s runs just shows the value of experience. Most players in the world would have panicked considering the situation Dhoni was in but he looked calmer than anybody else. It suggests that he has been in this situation many times before and knows how to pace a chase. Challenge for Dhoni is going to be when the side is batting first, how hard he needs to go. In terms of chasing a total, which is still the hardest thing in cricket, he is a genius.”

The former New Zealand coach is confident that the spinners will play a big role in the upcoming five-match ODI series between the hosts New Zealand and the visitors India, starting on 23 January.

Hesson said, “Wrist spinners Sodhi, Yadav and Chahal as well as Todd Astle will definitely play a big role, more than the finger in Santner who can provide the all-rounder’s role for the Black Caps. I believe both Sodhi and Astle are in the running for World Cup slots with the kind of pitches what will be on offer in England that time of the year. India with Kuldeep and Chahal have got very good variety. The ability of the New Zealand middle-order to play the wrist spin will probably dictate the course of this ODI series.”
While the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales is just four months away to begin, Hesson feels that the upcoming ODI series is the best way for both teams to make the preparation for the WC.

The former New Zealand coach said, “We have two of the top three ODI sides competing in this ODI series. In terms of preparation for World Cup, you couldn’t ask for a better dress rehearsal.”
