Milind Rege Passes Away At 76: Mumbai Cricket Mourns The Loss Of A Legend

Milind Rege, a stalwart of Mumbai cricket and a highly respected figure in Indian domestic cricket, passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 76 after suffering a heart attack. The former Mumbai captain and selector breathed his last at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where he had been admitted to the intensive care unit. His passing comes just days after celebrating his 76th birthday on Sunday. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Rege’s journey in cricket was marked by resilience and determination. At just 26, he suffered a heart attack but made a remarkable comeback to the game, going on to captain Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. His first-class career, spanning from 1966-67 to 1977-78, saw him play 52 matches, where he took 126 wickets with his right-arm off-break bowling.

Along with his skills as a bowler, he contributed significantly with the bat, amassing 1,532 runs at an average of 23.56. A childhood friend of legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, Rege shared a deep connection with him, having studied in the same school and college and playing together at the renowned Dadar Union Sporting Club.

Milind Rege’s influence on Mumbai cricket extended beyond his playing days, as he took on multiple administrative roles, serving as a selector and cricket advisor with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). His keen eye for talent and deep understanding of the game played a pivotal role in shaping Mumbai’s cricketing legacy. His contributions were deeply cherished by the Mumbai cricketing fraternity.

 

 

As a tribute, the Mumbai team, currently competing in the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Vidarbha in Nagpur, wore black armbands on the third day of the match to honour his memory.

MCA president Ajinkya Naik expressed his grief over Rege’s passing, acknowledging his immense contributions to the game. “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Milind Rege Sir. A stalwart of Mumbai cricket, his contributions as a player, selector, and mentor were invaluable. His guidance shaped generations of cricketers, and his legacy will forever be cherished. May his soul rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones,” Naik stated.
