Mitchell Marsh may not have taken home a medal at the 2025 Australian Cricket Awards, but he certainly stole the show with his sharp wit and self-deprecating humour. The 33-year-old all-rounder had a pretty tough summer, especially in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, where he had a tough time against the relentless Jasprit Bumrah. But despite being dropped for the final Test in Sydney, Marsh’s ability to laugh at himself remained intact.

Reflecting on his forgettable campaign, Mitchell Marsh had the audience in splits when he summed up his season with a cheeky remark. “It’s been incredible, really… capped off by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the way the boys played, especially with 10 players, without me. They did really well,” he quipped.

His lighthearted jab at his omission highlighted his humorous take on an otherwise tough series. Speaking to the press, Marsh admitted that he wouldn’t have cared to exchange places for a more spin-friendly tour of Sri Lanka.

“Yeah, look, if there’s one wicket I needed, it was probably that Galle wicket,” he joked, referring to the spin-heavy conditions that might have spared him Bumrah’s brutal pace.

However, the actual punchline was when Marsh disclosed that his fights with Bumrah didn’t end on the field. Not even in his backyard, it continued—the torture courtesy of his four-year-old nephew. “Actually, my little nephew Ted, he’s four years old, we played backyard cricket the other day. He came in with Bumrah’s action, and the nightmare continued!” Mitchell Marsh said as the audience roared with laughter.

Last year’s Allan Border Medallist, Marsh said he felt plenty of love and appreciation in 2024—until December, when things took a turn. “Yeah, prior to December I felt a lot of love. Post-December, bit of a different story,” he remarked.

Marsh struggled against India, scoring only 73 runs in seven innings with six scores in single digits and three wickets. His last competitive game was for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League when he was bowled for a duck on January 7. Though his batting may have hit a low point, his humor certainly hasn’t.
