It was in the contest of Hundred 2024 between London Spirit and Northern Superchargers at Headingley, Leeds, on August 13 that Mitchell Santner produced a fielding masterclass. In that, the New Zealand spinner left cricket enthusiasts in awe of his athleticism through an absolute jaw-dropping catch to get rid of Michael Pepper. It all happened on the third over with Reece Topley in the middle of his first over.

The second was off Pepper, who had lifted a shot over mid-on; as the ball arced through the sky and began to dip, Santner raced backward, his eyes locked on the ball, and pulled off a full-stretch dive for a truly exceptional catch. Thanks to Santner’s fabulous effort, Pepper had to make his way back to the pavilion with only three runs beside his name.

With the bat, London Spirit found it really tough to make any telling contribution as Keaton Jennings and Ravi Bopara were the only two who scored above 30 runs. A late charge by Liam Dawson – he made 27 – saw the Spirit limp to 111 all out after their 100 balls were up.

The Northern Superchargers, however, proved to be a different matter when it came to bowling. Adil Rashid was at the forefront of their bowling, returning figures of 3 for 34. Reece Topley and Matthew Potts ably supported this with identical figures of 2 for 17.

The game was, however, washed out in the second innings after 44 balls due to rain. According to the DLS method, the Superchargers were declared winners as they had managed to score 64 runs for the loss of just one wicket in those 44 balls, thereby placing them 21 runs ahead. Adil Rashid expressed satisfaction over the team’s performance and was adjudged the Player of the Match.

“Fortunately, we got those runs in time before the rain came. We did well with bat and ball. The runs were coming quite quickly, and we have got a very good squad. We’re playing well, so hopefully we’ll go through to the next round. “Rashid said.” The game of cricket was very unpredictable, he conceded. “Sometimes it goes well, bowling-wise, and sometimes you get hit. That’s just part and parcel of the game. “If you don’t get wickets early on, then it’s very hard to take wickets in the middle overs.”
