Australia’s preparations for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy suffered a massive blow as their renowned pace trio—Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood—have all been ruled out. Cummins (ankle) and Hazlewood (side and calf) were already doubtful, but Starc’s sudden withdrawal for personal reasons has further weakened their bowling arsenal. With Cummins unavailable, Steve Smith will take over as captain, having recently led Australia to a dominant Test series victory over Sri Lanka.

Adding to Australia’s woes, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, a key figure in their white-ball setup, announced his retirement from ODI cricket last week. Mitchell Marsh, another all-round option, was previously ruled out due to a back injury. Chief selector George Bailey acknowledged these disruptions but remained optimistic about the squad’s adaptability.

“The squad has undergone significant changes due to injuries and Stoinis’ retirement,” George Bailey said. “The positive side is that we’ve been able to call upon players who have performed well at the international level over the past year. A strong core of experienced players will provide stability as we aim to win this Champions Trophy.”

Bailey also expressed full support for Starc’s personal decision to step away from the tournament, stating, “Mitch is deeply respected for his commitment to Australian cricket. While his absence is a setback, it also presents an opportunity for another player to make an impact.”

Starc’s absence will also keep him out of Australia’s upcoming two-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, beginning later this week. With the veteran pacers unavailable, Australia will rely on rising talents like Spencer Johnson, Nathan Ellis, and Ben Dwarshuis to fill the void. Aaron Hardie has been included as a seam-bowling all-rounder, while young leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha joins Adam Zampa as part of Australia’s spin attack.

The Champions Trophy, featuring eight teams, will take place between February 19 and March 9, with matches being played in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. Despite the setbacks, Australia will be looking to regroup and put forth a competitive challenge in the tournament.
