Virat Kohli’s legacy in the Indian Premier League is undeniable. From being the face of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) since the league’s inception to becoming its most prolific run-scorer, Kohli’s journey with the franchise has been nothing short of iconic. Yet, for all his brilliance, there was one elusive prize that kept slipping away—the IPL trophy. That is, until 2025, when RCB finally lifted the coveted title.

But before that historic win came years of near misses, heartbreaks, and even internal debates about leadership, one of which has now resurfaced, thanks to Moeen Ali. In a candid revelation, Moeen Ali, the former RCB and England all-rounder, spoke about a moment in 2019 that could’ve significantly altered RCB’s trajectory.

During that season, RCB finished at the bottom of the points table, managing just five wins. The poor performance led to internal discussions, and Moeen claims that then-head coach Gary Kirsten had suggested a captaincy change. Parthiv Patel, known for his astute cricketing mind and experience, was reportedly considered a potential replacement for Kohli.

“In the final year, when Gary Kirsten was there—after the first year, I believe—Parthiv was in line to become captain. He had a brilliant cricketing brain. That was the talk at the time. I don’t know what happened or why it didn’t materialise, but I’m sure he was seriously considered for the role,” Moeen Ali said during an interview with Sports Tak.

Despite the internal rumblings, RCB stuck with Kohli as captain for two more seasons. However, changes were made in the backroom staff. Gary Kirsten was replaced after 2019, and Mike Hesson was brought in as Director of Cricket, with Simon Katich taking over as head coach. Under the new leadership, RCB bounced back to reach the playoffs in 2020 and 2021.

It was just before the 2021 playoffs that Kohli made a significant announcement—he would step down as RCB’s captain after the season. He also relinquished his T20I captaincy for India after a disappointing ICC T20 World Cup exit. Eventually, Faf du Plessis took over as RCB’s captain, and Rohit Sharma succeeded him as India’s all-format skipper.

The wait for RCB’s title ended in 2025, under a somewhat surprising leader, Rajat Patidar. With seasoned names in the squad, Patidar’s elevation raised eyebrows, but he led the team with maturity and poise, guiding RCB to their first-ever IPL triumph. The win was a moment of redemption not just for the team, but also for fans who had stood by them through years of underachievement.

For Kohli and millions of RCB fans, the title was more than just a trophy—it was validation, legacy, and the crowning moment of years of unwavering belief.
