Man of the Series for the second series in a row, Pakistan’s medium-pacer Mohammad Abbas has his sights set on continuing his astonishing rise as a Test bowler after bowling his team to a 373-run win over Australia in Abu Dhabi on Friday. He registers the spell of 5/62 on the fourth day of the second Test as Australia were crushed, taking his tally for the match to 10/95.

Abbas was named Man of the Match and Man of the Series for taking 17 wickets in two Tests versus Australia – the best returns by a bowler in a series of that number in the UAE – and extended his overall tally to 59 in 10 Tests at a phenomenal average of 15.64. He also became the first fast bowler to claim ten wickets in a Test in the UAE. In June, he had been named Player of the Series after the 1-1 draw in England where he took 10 wickets including eight in victory at Lord’s.

Talking about his performance, Abbas said, “It’s a day of great delight for me.Whatever the pitch, my job is to bowl to my strengths. I’ve been Man of the Series back to back … wanted to replicate my performances from England. I think I bowled to my strengths [and] to the opposition’s weakness. I hit my areas, didn’t get out of my circle. It is a matter of great pride for me as I wanted to do this in England, but couldn’t.”

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed was a pleased man after the win, both as leader of a team that had lost its previous Test series in the UAE 0-2 to Sri Lanka, and individually for scoring 94 and 81 after criticism of his batting during the recent Asia Cup.

Describing his feeling after the win, Safraz said, “The way Abbas has bowled this series is a huge gain for us. Fakhar [Zaman] has had an excellent debut, he’s an important player. This team management wants to give confidence to young players. The youngsters who have come through in recent times have done well and we have to ensure they are groomed. There was pressure, but thankfully my batting performance in this Test contributed to the win.”

Pakistan next play Tests against New Zealand in the UAE in November. They remain at seventh place on the ICC Test Championship but gained seven points with this series win.
