India’s dramatic six-run win at The Oval, which helped them level the Test series 2-2 against England, brought immense satisfaction to fans and players alike. Still, perhaps the most significant relief was felt by head coach Gautam Gambhir. According to former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif, the result may have saved Gambhir’s job.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif addressed the enormous pressure Gambhir had been under throughout the five-Test series. After a string of disappointing results—most notably a 3-0 drubbing at home against New Zealand and a 3-1 loss in Australia—questions were being raised about Gambhir’s suitability for red-ball coaching. Many believed that the England tour could be his final opportunity to silence critics and prove his credentials.

“There was tremendous pressure on him. He hadn’t enjoyed much success in Tests and this series was crucial,” Mohammad Kaif noted. “Had India lost the final Test, the noise around his sacking would’ve only grown louder. Social media was already ready with its memes and criticism. But to be fair, when credit is due, it must be given.”

Kaif also acknowledged that Gambhir’s selection decisions—often debated and sometimes unpopular—had ultimately played a part in the comeback. For instance, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna’s game-changing spells in the final innings at The Oval turned the tide when the game seemed to be slipping away. Their effort, according to Kaif, could very well have ensured Gambhir remains in charge for future Test assignments.

Throughout the series, Gambhir’s calls sparked debate. He backed Jasprit Bumrah for only three matches, which led to questions about managing resources. He also benched Kuldeep Yadav—India’s premier wrist-spinner—choosing instead to lengthen the batting lineup with all-rounders like Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja.

“We were all asking for Kuldeep, especially in Bumrah’s absence, but Gambhir stuck to his strategy,” Mohammad Kaif explained. “He wanted batting till number eight, and that worked. Sundar and Jadeja both contributed significantly. That depth helped us win.”

The victories at Edgbaston and The Oval, powered by younger players, showed Gambhir’s long-term vision. And while criticism hasn’t completely disappeared, the series draw has certainly bought him some breathing room and, more importantly, some respect.
