Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Mohammad Kaif has made a strong statement on Virat Kohli ahead of IPL 2026, backing the star to thrive despite returning from a break. With RCB set to begin their title defence against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28, Kohli’s form remains a major talking point. Kohli, who now focuses primarily on ODIs, heads into the season after a short break — something Kaif believes could actually work in his favour.

According to the former India batter, adapting across formats is second nature to Kohli, making him an exception rather than the norm.“It will not make a difference. In fact, it will benefit him as he is coming with a fresh mind,” Mohammad Kaif said. He emphasized that while such transitions might trouble other players, Kohli has consistently shown the ability to switch gears seamlessly.
Kaif also pointed out a noticeable shift in Kohli’s batting approach in recent months. His improved strike rate in white-ball cricket, especially against South Africa and New Zealand, reflects a more aggressive mindset — something that could further elevate his impact in IPL 2026. Beyond his batting, Kohli’s influence within the squad remains unmatched. Kaif believes the veteran will not allow any complacency to creep into the dressing room after last season’s historic title win.

“Virat Kohli will not accept any complacency. He always starts from zero,” Mohammad Kaif remarked. He added that Kohli’s intensity and commitment will keep every player on their toes, ensuring that the team maintains its hunger for success. RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, finally ended their long wait for an IPL trophy in 2025 by defeating Punjab Kings in a thrilling final. While the team’s improved bowling unit played a crucial role, Kaif stressed that Kohli remained the backbone of their success.

“Virat Kohli is the focal point of RCB. If he hadn’t scored consistently, things could have been different,” he noted. Kohli finished as RCB’s leading run-scorer last season, amassing 657 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 144.71, including eight half-centuries. His consistency at the top of the order laid the foundation for the team’s title-winning campaign.
Kaif also highlighted Kohli’s loyalty to the franchise, having stayed with RCB for 17 seasons despite numerous opportunities elsewhere. That emotional moment — when teammates rushed towards him after the final — symbolised years of patience and dedication. As IPL 2026 approaches, expectations are once again sky-high. And if Kaif’s words are anything to go by, Kohli is far from done — he’s just getting started again.
