Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has strongly criticised Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) decision to release veteran all-rounder Andre Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Kaif squarely blamed the move on KKR’s new head coach, Abhishek Nayar, suggesting it reflected an unnecessary urge to reshape the squad without preserving its core strengths.

Russell, who KKR retained for ₹12 crore, took up ₹18 crore in their purse due to retention rules. Despite being 38 and playing limited competitive cricket, Russell remains one of the most explosive finishers in IPL history. He has amassed 2651 runs at a staggering strike rate of 174.18, winning two IPL titles with KKR and earning cult status among fans.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Kaif called the decision “not right” and “astonishing.” He argued that Russell’s experience and ability to change games single-handedly, especially in high-pressure situations, should have been valued over inconsistent form.

“You had him for 12 crore—not an extravagant amount for a once-in-a-generation player,” Mohammad Kaif said. “Yes, he had a rough patch, but he also scored important runs. Coaches come and go, but players like Russell shouldn’t be cast aside so quickly. I believe Abhishek Nayar wants to make this team his own, and that’s why this decision was made, but it’s a huge call.”

With a whopping ₹64.30 crore in the purse, KKR now head into the IPL 2026 mega auction with the most money to spend. Reports suggest they may aggressively target Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who could be available if released by his current franchise.

However, Mohammad Kaif argued that even Green can’t replicate Russell’s finishing prowess. “Even four players like Cameron Green cannot match Russell’s impact,” he said. “He can hit 100-metre sixes at will and win games from impossible situations. Players like him are rare, especially at No. 7. If they play Green there, he won’t get even half Russell’s runs. He bats higher up.”

Kaif concluded by suggesting KKR make every effort to repurchase Russell at the auction, emphasising that his power, experience, and legacy make him irreplaceable.
