India continued their dominant run in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, securing an unassailable 3-0 lead with a convincing six-wicket victory in Wellington on October 27, 2026. Chasing a target of 199, the visitors completed the pursuit in just 13.2 overs, finishing with 40 balls remaining in a remarkable display of aggressive batting.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif praised head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer for their role in the team’s impressive performance. He highlighted how the leadership duo maintained an attacking mindset despite a demanding schedule involving consecutive matches, limited recovery time and extensive travel across New Zealand.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mohammad Kaif credited the Indian batters for rising to the challenge and dominating a competitive New Zealand side on their home turf. “I would want to credit the Indian batters a lot. This was not an easy series. But the Indian batters have played really well. They never played this well, even in Ireland or Zimbabwe. They have dominated here. This is a big achievement. The team has passed in this test,” Kaif said.

He also acknowledged Gambhir’s contribution as head coach and praised Iyer for ensuring that the team remained aggressive throughout the series. “Gautam Gambhir, as a coach, also deserves credit. Credit to Shreyas, the captain, as well. They have maintained the mindset and remained dominant under a tight schedule,” he added.

New Zealand had put up a competitive total of 198/3 in their allotted 20 overs, with Daryl Mitchell leading the charge through an unbeaten 89. Given the batting-friendly conditions, the hosts had reasons to believe they could challenge India during the chase.
However, India’s opening pair quickly changed the complexion of the contest. Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided a blazing start, smashing 45 runs off just 19 deliveries and putting the New Zealand bowlers under immediate pressure. Abhishek Sharma then delivered a sensational performance, scoring 113 off only 38 balls. His explosive century ensured India stayed well ahead of the required run rate and brought the chase under control long before the final overs.

India eventually reached the target in 13.2 overs, registering a six-wicket victory and extending their series lead to 3-0. Kaif’s praise reflected the importance of maintaining consistency and confidence during a demanding international tour. Under Gambhir’s coaching and Iyer’s captaincy, India have combined aggressive batting with a clear approach, making their performances against New Zealand a significant statement ahead of the remaining fixtures.
