Rishabh Pant’s inconsistency remained a talking point as Lucknow Super Giants edged past Kolkata Knight Riders in a last-ball thriller during IPL 2026. After a promising half-century against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Pant once again failed to convert his start, scoring just 10 off 8 balls. His dismissal came at a crucial juncture when Cameron Green’s short ball forced a mistimed top edge, ending his stay near the fine leg region.

At 73/2 in 8.1 overs, LSG looked in control of the chase. However, Rishabh Pant’s wicket triggered a collapse, with the team slipping to 128/7. It took a sensational unbeaten knock from Mukul Choudhary to rescue the side and seal a dramatic win. While the youngster stole the spotlight, former India batter Mohammad Kaif raised concerns about Pant’s approach.
“…the team needed him to stay till the end,” Mohammad Kaif said on Star Sports. He emphasized that Rishabh Pant, being one of the most experienced players in the setup, should have taken responsibility in a manageable chase. “The situation when he came out to bat was not particularly difficult,” he added, highlighting that LSG had already built a solid foundation.

Kaif also pointed out the importance of leadership in such moments. “As captain, if you don’t take responsibility, you cannot help your team win games,” he remarked. He further stressed the need for consistency, noting that one good innings is not enough at this level. “He has to read the match situation better,” Kaif said, underlining the importance of game awareness.

Despite the concerns around Rishabh Pant, LSG secured their second win of the season. Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar credited the youngsters for stepping up when senior players failed to deliver.
“They were in a tough spot, but sealed a miraculous win with the help of their youngsters,” Sunil Gavaskar said. He noted that key players like Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Pant, and Nicholas Pooran struggled to make an impact.

Gavaskar also highlighted a shift in LSG’s approach this season. “Last year, they relied completely on their main players,” he said. “This season, they are winning without relying on them.”
However, Nicholas Pooran’s poor form remains a concern. “What’s a concern for LSG is the poor form of Nicholas Pooran,” Gavaskar said. He observed that Pooran looked out of touch and lacked his usual confidence, adding that the team must help him regain rhythm quickly.
