Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has delivered a timely reality check to newly appointed T20I vice-captain Tilak Varma ahead of India’s two-match T20I series against Ireland. While Tilak’s elevation to the leadership group highlights the selectors’ faith in his potential, Kaif believes the 22-year-old cannot afford to become complacent. According to the former batter, the current Indian team management values form over reputation, meaning even senior players must continue to perform to hold their places in the playing XI.

India, led by new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, begin a fresh chapter against Lorcan Tucker’s Ireland in Belfast on Friday, June 26. The series not only marks Iyer’s first assignment as full-time captain but also Tilak’s debut as vice-captain. Despite the promotion, Kaif insisted that leadership responsibilities should not be mistaken for guaranteed selection.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif pointed out that the Indian dressing room now operates on a performance-first philosophy. He warned Tilak that a dip in form could quickly change his fortunes, regardless of his designation within the team.

“Being vice-captain doesn’t guarantee a place in the XI. If Tilak starts believing his position is secure because of the role, that’s not how this Indian team functions anymore,” Mohammad Kaif explained.
The former India batter also highlighted how quickly leadership roles can change by citing Axar Patel’s example. Axar previously served as India’s T20I vice-captain but has since been replaced by Tilak, proving that the selectors are willing to move forward whenever they believe another player is better suited for the role.

Kaif stressed that every cricketer in the current Indian setup is under constant scrutiny, including the captain. He believes the coaching staff and selectors have created a highly competitive environment where every match becomes an opportunity to either strengthen or lose one’s place in the squad.
“This Indian team has adopted a completely different mindset. Nobody’s place is permanent—not even the captain’s. Every player has to earn the right to wear the India jersey in every game,” Mohammad Kaif added.

Despite the warning, Tilak Varma enters the Ireland series in exceptional form. The stylish left-hander recently captained India A to the one-day tri-series title against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A, finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 275 runs from five matches at an impressive average of 55. Tilak’s T20I numbers further justify the confidence shown in him. The middle-order batter has amassed 1,390 runs in 49 matches at an outstanding average of 44.83 and an attacking strike rate of 145.54, including two centuries and six half-centuries.
