Former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could be carrying a fair bit of pressure into the Zimbabwe T20I series, but he also feels a well-paced 50 or 60 could be exactly the kind of innings the teenage opener needs to reset his international journey. After a difficult tour of England, Kaif feels the young left-hander now has a chance to turn promise into impact in familiar-looking conditions at Harare Sports Club.
Sooryavanshi made his India debut against England, where he scored 14 off 10 balls in his first T20I. India lost that contest by four wickets, and although the teenager showed glimpses of intent, he was unable to produce the kind of innings that had made him one of the most talked-about young batters in world cricket. The contrast is even sharper when compared with his blistering 175 off 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final at the same Harare venue, a performance that announced him to the cricket world in emphatic fashion.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Mohammad Kaif said Sooryavanshi remains a special talent, but the next step is to convert potential into a meaningful contribution for India. “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi got the chance, but a big score did not come from his bat. He would also wish that he contributes for the team, because he is a class batter,” Kaif said. “It is a huge thing to win the Orange Cap in the IPL as a 15-year-old. Right now, he might be nervous. If he scores a 50-60 run knock, then he will shine. He is a great talent, there is no doubt about that at all.”

India will play three T20Is against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club from July 23 to 26, 2026. Sooryavanshi arrives as one of the biggest talking points of the series after becoming the youngest-ever Orange Cap winner at just 15 years and 65 days during IPL 2026. His success in franchise cricket has raised expectations, but international cricket has already shown him that reputation alone counts for little.
Kaif also pointed to the difficult phase India captain Shreyas Iyer has been going through. Iyer is yet to win a match as India skipper, having suffered defeats in his first seven games in charge. India also endured a first-ever bilateral series defeat to Ireland and followed that with another disappointing outing in England.
“Even before the India captaincy, Shreyas Iyer had a losing run in the second half of IPL 2026,” Mohammad Kaif said. “Now, after losing against Ireland and then against England, the captain is under the most tension. At least get off the mark, right now, we are not even able to start.”

For both Iyer and Sooryavanshi, the Zimbabwe series is more than just another bilateral assignment. It is a chance to steady India’s momentum, answer the criticism and begin again on African soil.
